Andre Onana misses out on major 2025 goalkeeping award

When Andre Onana joined Manchester United in July 2023, United fans hoped that his modern ball-playing goalkeeper archetype would transform the team’s playstyle and capabilities.

After 2 years at the club, Onana’s time at Manchester United has unfortunately been marked by a plethora of errors and missed opportunities. After recording only 24 clean sheets for the Red Devils in his 102 games at the club, the United hierarchy decided that time was up for the Cameroonian.

Onana moved to Turkish side Trabzonspor in September and, despite the move taking the form of a loan deal, it is clear from the arrival of Senne Lammens that there is no way back for Onana at Manchester United.

Since arriving in Turkey, Onana has conceded 7 goals in his first 8 games for his new club and amassed only 3 clean sheets. A tally which puts him 11th on the Turkish Super Lig goalkeeper rankings for clean sheets kept.

Despite a tumultuous year, Onana managed an impressive personal achievement by working his way into the shortlist for the 2025 CAF Best Goalkeeper Award, the award granted to the best goalkeeper of an African nationality.

However, despite having made the shortlist, Onana’s streak of unfortunate events seems to have continued as it was announced today by the CAF that the goalkeeper had not made the list of the final keepers under consideration for the award.

The three goalkeepers now in contention for the award are RS Berkane’s Munir Mohamedi, Al-Hilal’s Yassine Bounou, and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams. The winner of the award will be announced at the CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat, Morocco on Wednesday 19th November.

Fans tuning into the event can also witness the crowning of the 2025 CAF African Player of the Year.

For Andre Onana, however, this marks another setback in what has already been a very difficult two years for the Cameroonian.
