Andre Onana, currently on loan from Manchester United, has joined Trabzonspor in Turkey.
Senne Lammens’ deadline day arrival signalled that Onana no longer had a role at United.
Onana was already second choice before Lammens came in and then found himself third in the pecking order. It wasn’t a situation he was willing to accept.
The two sides quickly agreed on a loan deal with Trabzonspor for the rest of the season, giving Onana the opportunity to play more regularly again.
Andre Onana was brought to Manchester United in the summer of 2023, handpicked by Erik ten Hag to take over from David de Gea.
The goalkeeper’s early performances didn’t help, with a string of mistakes contributing to the club’s exit from the Champions League group stage.
Amorim and many supporters lost confidence in the Cameroonian due to the numerous mistakes he made during his time at Old Trafford. That confidence never really returned.
Things hit a low point after the Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby, which only strengthened the club’s push for Lammens.
Onana discussed his time at Man United during a press conference in Turkey, where he disclaimed any responsibility for the team’s poor performance last season, according to CNN Turkey.
He actually attributed United’s disappointing year to a collective failing, with all players sharing responsibility.
“We don’t play individual sports. You experience both wins and losses together.
“You might not see certain details in victories, but those details come to the fore in losses.”
He also added: “I love the Manchester fans and have a good relationship with them. I wish them success.”
Onana’s first game for Trabzonspor ended in a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce, but he performed well and was just happy to be back between the posts. But he’s not making any bold predictions about what the season might hold.
“We will compete here, sometimes we will lose, sometimes we will win. I want to have a good season and be successful,” he said.
“I consider myself a modern player. I try to adapt to the team’s needs,” he added.
Last Saturday, he made his second appearance for the Turkish side, impressively contributing with an assist in a 1-1 draw against Gaziantep.
