Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was relieved as his players were unscathed after their game against Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League on Friday night. The Lilywhites were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa away from home and they have now gone on to lose 21 games in the league this season. It is the most defeats that any Spurs manager has achieved in a single Premier League season. It looks like the end of road is near for Ange Postecoglou at the helm.

The ex-Celtic boss preferred to not play his first-choice team against the Villains. As the Europa League final is less than a week away, Ange Postecoglou could not risk playing his key players in a dead-rubber game. The North London club have endured an injury crisis this season. So, risking more players on Friday night would not have made sense as Spurs have their biggest game of the season coming up against Manchester United.

The Lilywhites need to win the final if they want to save their blushes this season. They have now registered 25 defeats in all competitions in this campaign. But all will be forgiven if Ange’s men manage to win the Europa League and end the long-standing trophy drought at N17.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou believes injury scare is ‘not too significant’

Tottenham have already lost James Maddison , Lucas Bergvall, and Dejan Kulusevski to long-term injuries just days before the Europa League final. The trio are set to miss the club’s most important game in recent history. Looking at the way the campaign has gone for Big Ange (in terms of injury issues), the ex-Celtic boss opted to play his second-choice team against Aston Villa on Friday night.

But Spurs faced an injury scare against the Villains as well. Pape Matar Sarr and Mikey Moore were substituted prematurely after it looked like both players got injured during the game. When asked about the pair getting subbed off, Ange Postecoglou said in his presser (as transcribed by Football.london),

“Pape felt something in his back so we took him off as a bit of a precaution. I don’t think it’s anything too significant speaking to him afterwards but he just felt something in his back and I think Mikey (Moore) was okay. It was fatigue as much as anything else. He hasn’t played that sort of amount of minutes before.”

Ange Postecoglou suggested that Pape Matar Sarr felt a niggle in his back and the ex-Celtic decided to take the midfielder off as a precaution. The Spurs manager reassured the fans that it was nothing significant. Big Ange also added that Mikey Moore was taken off due to fatigue as the youngster had not played in a while and needed time to get his match-fitness back.

Fans will be relieved to know that the Lilywhites have survived an injury scare this time. The North London club has already missed a lot of key players through injuries during crucial parts of the season. It is important to acknowledge the way Ange Postecoglou has handled the minutes of his key players ever since they have recovered to full fitness.
