Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall has been officially ruled out of the Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao

Tottenham Hotspur cross swords with Manchester United in the Europa League final on Mat 21 in what has become a vital game for both clubs.

Spurs have not had the ideal preparations ahead of the Europa League final. They lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace at home on Sunday. Dejan Kulusevski suffered an injury early into the game, and the worst fears of Ange Postecoglou and the Tottenham fans turned into reality on Wednesday when he was ruled out of the European final. Kulusevski underwent a knee surgery that has sidelined him for several months.

Lucas Bergvall and James Maddison will also be unavailable for the big game in Bilbao, although recent reports suggested that the former could make a miraculous recovery and return. The young midfielder has not featured of late after damaging ligaments in his ankle during the final training session ahead of the semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt.

Just a week before the final, Ange Postecoglou has dropped the fresh injury update on Lucas Bergvall. Speaking ahead of Spurs’ trip to Aston Villa on Friday evening, the Australian told Football London:

“No, it is still the same sort of timeframe. He was never a long-term one but he has literally just got out of the boot and taken his first tentative steps on the grass, but he won’t be available.”

That just clears the air regarding Bergvall’s availability. The Sweden international picked up an injury in training ahead of Spurs’ clash with Bodo/Glimt and was spotted on the sidelines wearing a protective boot during the clash. He has only got out of the protective boot, which is a positive update, but not enough to see him make it to the final against Man United.

This means Ange has to make do without Bergvall, Maddison and Kulusevski in midfield next Wednesday. The trio have been extremely important to the Lilywhites this season, and in their absences, it is difficult to see from where creativity would come from midfield.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma were both excellent against Bodo/Glimt and are likely to start the final against Ruben Amorim’s side. And now with Bergvall officially ruled out, Pape Matar Sarr is the most likely option to join Bentancur and Bissouma in the engine room.
