Ange Postecoglou may have managed his final Tottenham Hotspur game after his team suffered their 22nd Premier League defeat of the 2024/25 season against Brighton and Hove Albion.
A bright start for Spurs was rewarded, after Mathys Tel was brought down inside the box by Mats Wieffer within the first 20 minutes. Dominic Solanke converted the resultant spot kick, and the home side went into half time 1-0.
Brighton came roaring back after the interval. Jack Hinshelwood scored a brace to put the Seagulls 2-1 ahead, before Matt O’Riley netted the third from the spot after Yves Bissouma tackled Diego Gomez from behind in the box. Just as the Lilywhites thought the afternoon could not get any worse, Diego Gomez scored a long-range screamer past a hapless Guglielmo Vicario to seal a memorable final day deal for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.
The result meant Tottenham ended the 2024/25 season rooted to 17th spot—the club’s lowest finish in the Premier League era. The North Londoners’ results at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were as bad as their form on the travels, with Ange Postecoglou overseeing an unacceptable 10 home league defeats.
Postecoglou faced the media for the final time this season. When asked to review Spurs’ season after the 4-1 battering at the hands of Brighton, the Australian said (h/t BBC Sport):
“How do I assess it?! Outstanding! “We won a trophy, which we haven’t done for 17 years, and we’re in the Champions League.
“Ask anyone at this football club at the start of the year if they’d take that and I’m pretty sure there wouldn’t be a person in the house that wouldn’t.”
Ange would have loved to finish the league season strongly but he couldn’t. The result did make a sore reading and saw the Lilywhites finish just a spot above the three relegated clubs. The league form throughout the campaign was truly unacceptable and that may end up costing Ange his job.
Despite a forgettable domestic term, Tottenham managed to lift the Europa League and end their long trophy drought. During the trophy parade last week, the Australian tactician confidently declared that his third season will be even better than his second. The 59-year-old has delivered what he promised back in September , now the onus is on Daniel Levy whether he wants to retain him and give a chance to continue his project at N17.
