Milan will have to make do with another regular for a few months, as Matteo Gabbia suffered a serious thigh injury against Sassuolo and will miss the rest of 2027. The defender has been diagnosed with a left flexor strain with a partial tendon tear, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.
He will visit a specialist to assess whether he needs surgery to repair the damage or if he can make a full recovery through rest and rehab. Either way, he’ll spend at least a couple of months on the shelf.
Gabbia was making his first start in the clash between Milan and Sassuolo. Ruben Amorim had so far preferred Koni De Winter, also because the veteran dealt with a bum ankle beforehand. In the meantime, Alexis Saelemaekers will indeed go under the knife due to his ankle issue.
Fikayo Tomori and Sankhoun Diawara, who have yet to play, are next in line in the depth chart. The Englishman was initially frozen out during the summer, but then he re-entered the squad.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Rossoneri won’t add a free agent. However, the major injury will accelerate their plans to sign a big-ticket defender in January. The boss is keen to reunite with Leny Yoro. Instead, agent Jorge Mendes would rather bring Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inacio to San Siro. Both are pricey.
The loss isn’t as massive as it would have been last season, as he wasn’t a staple, and De Winter has grown a lot and looked at ease in their new system, but it’s still a problem. A new center-back is most likely coming in the winter, and they probably won’t mess about with the fee.
