Not many expected Richarlison to still be a Tottenham player beyond the summer transfer window following his disappointing campaign last season. The Brazil international endured an injury-plagued year, which allowed Dominic Solanke to cement his place as the first-choice striker under Ange Postecoglou. Even after returning to full fitness, Richarlison struggled to make an impact, ending the season with just five goals to his name.
Given his struggles, it came as no surprise that the 28-year-old was linked with several clubs during the summer. Tottenham were also reportedly open to selling him if a suitable offer arrived. However, a move ultimately failed to materialise, and Thomas Frank decided to hand the Brazilian one final opportunity to prove his worth at N17.
To his credit, Richarlison took that chance with both hands. The Spurs No.9 made a flying start to the new campaign, scoring a brace against Burnley on the opening day to silence his critics. He followed that up with a poacher’s finish against Brighton, taking his Premier League tally to three goals for the season — a sign that he might be rediscovering his touch in front of goal.
Richarlison’s future, however, continues to be the subject of speculation. Everton were among the clubs interested in re-signing him during the summer as they sought to bolster their attacking options. Manager David Moyes was reportedly keen to bring the Brazilian back to Goodison Park, believing he could rejuvenate his career by offering him regular minutes up front. But the 28-year-old opted to stay at N17 and fight for his place under Thomas Frank instead.
Now, fresh reports suggest that Everton’s interest could be reignited in the winter transfer window. Speaking to TEAMtalk, Dean Jones revealed that the Toffees are open to signing another forward if their attack continues to misfire in the coming months.
“There is going to be an openness to sign another forward if they still lack cutting edge, and that will form more clearly between now and January. They will wait to see the market opportunities that exist and aim to sign a player who can fit in. But, what is the financial commitment needed?”
The journalist added,
“There is talk of a £30m transfer valuation, but you also have to consider his personal package. The level of wages does matter. An option would be Richarlison. Links to Everton are always there, and his future at Spurs is coming into doubt again if they are to sign another forward.”
Jones’ comments indicate that Everton could revisit their pursuit of Richarlison in January, particularly if Tottenham decide to bring in a new striker. The forward already has a strong connection with the Merseyside club, and his prior success at Goodison Park could make him a natural fit should the opportunity arise.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Richarlison. The 28-year-old has always failed to step up for Spurs when it has mattered the most. So, it is better if the North Londoners cut their losses and sell him at a reasonable price in the coming months. Thomas Frank wants to buy a new striker next summer anyways, which indicates that the Brazilian’s time at N17 is slowly coming to an end.
