Anthony Gordon calls Wayne Rooney a liar

Tuesday night saw Newcastle United take on Barcelona at St. James’ Park in their first leg of the Last 16.

Impressively The Magpies held the reigning La Liga champions to a 1-1 draw thanks to goals from Harvey Barnes and a Lamine Yamal penalty.

However, it wasn’t only the scoreline or performances to grab the attention of the pundits, but one particular absence also came under scrutiny.

Anthony Gordon, despite being one of Newcastle’s top players, only came on as a substitute in the 67th minute, replacing William Osula.

The reason for his absence from the starting line-up was put down to illness, however, the likes of Roy Keane, Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney questioned this with his ability to come on in the second half.

Now, after Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Premier League, Anthony Gordon took his chance with the post-game interview to set the record straight.

Speaking in his interview, as reported by BBC Sport, Gordon explained: “What the media guy told me was being said was complete stupidity.”

He continued: “I was in bed for three days, missed training, so sick for three days.

“Then I turned up on the day of the game, ready to start the game. I thought I was starting.

“When I got to the stadium the manager told me I wasn’t playing, which, as you can imagine, I didn’t like very much, but that’s his decision and the team played great.

“Saying I didn’t want to play in the biggest game of my career is absolute nonsense.

“I think Rooney said I went past and didn’t shake their hands and went into the changing room. I didn’t.

“I got changed by myself in a changing room the size of this. It was just me and a sink. So complete nonsense. I think they need to do better at what they are doing.”
