Antoine Semenyo is on the verge of signing for Manchester City, despite Manchester United’s attempts to bring him to Old Trafford during the January transfer window.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that Manchester United made a strong push for Semenyo, but the 26-year-old forward decided against making the switch to Old Trafford. Instead, he opted for a move across town to join Pep Guardiola’s side.
Former Red Devils head coach, Ruben Amorim, had even spoken publicly about his admiration for the striker before United faced Bournemouth, calling him a “special” player.
However, it was not enough to make Man United win the transfer race. And it was reported that the wages City offered Semenyo were a deciding factor.
Ineos, having worked to bring the club’s spending under control, were not willing to disrupt the wage structure for one player.
Semenyo’s £65m release clause was another hurdle for United, especially with outgoing transfer debts piling up. Taking on that cost would have put a serious dent in their summer plans.
The Ghanaian’s new contract with City is reported by The Guardian to be worth £150,000 per week over five years.
That adds up to around £7.8 million per year, not including the additional incentives that are said to be part of the agreement.
Manchester City are structuring their payments over three years – an approach United have taken before in deals for players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
For a player of Semenyo’s ability, the salary offered by City does not look unreasonable. And when you compare it to what some of United’s players are already making, it becomes even more apparent.
Casemiro tops the wage bill at Old Trafford, taking home £350,000 per week, with Bruno Fernandes not far behind on £300,000 per week.
Semenyo’s new contract sees his earnings fall below those of several players, including Mason Mount, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw.
Furthermore, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are reportedly earning a similar wage, estimated to be around £150,000 per week at United.
Ineos have been careful not to hand out massive contracts to new arrivals. But in this case, Semenyo might have been gettable without breaking the bank.
