Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario produced a magnificent save for the Lilywhites in their Premier League game against West Ham United. Ange Postecoglou’s side drew their game against the Hammers at the London Stadium. But all the plaudits went to Vicario, who produced a brilliant save from close-range after Jarrod Bowen leaped to give West Ham a probable lead in the dying minutes.
The Italy international has endured a tough campaign between the sticks. He has also made some crucial mistakes leading to goals in recent games. However, the 28-year-old has occasionally pulled off some ‘out-of-the-world’ saves which have showcased his true potential and talent.
After missing almost three months of the season through a foot injury , the ex-Empoli keeper was quick to regain his place in the starting eleven. However, it has not been an easy road for the Italian since recovering in January. Like many Spurs players, the 28-year-old has also underperformed and Daniel Levy is said to be in the market to find a replacement for next season.
Guglielmo Vicario was Ange Postecoglou’s first signing for Tottenham. The keeper was brilliant in his first season at the club under the Australian manager. He was key in building attacks from the back and playing long balls to the forwards to break the press. However, the second season has been a disaster for the Italy international.
But his performance against West Ham showed why he is still a reliable goalkeeper. Vicario also captained his side for the first time in their match against the Hammers. When asked about his leadership quality and performance, Archie Gray told Tottenham Hotspur website,
“He’s definitely got all the natural abilities to be a leader for sure. We know how good he is and his quality and I don’t need to say more than that. He knows how good he is. He provides extra communication that really helps defenders.”
Archie Gray suggested that Vicario has got all the abilities to lead the team. The youngster also insisted that Vicario is loud and instructs the defenders well, which helps young players perform. Gray also insisted that the Italian keeper certainly possesses the quality to be a world-class goalkeeper and tends to provide the extra communication that helps the backline.
Spurs face an important game on Thursday in the return leg of the Europa League semi-finals. Ange’s men take on Bodo/Glimt and have the task of defending the two-goal lead that they secured in the first leg. The fans will hope that Vicario continues his fine form and proves to be an important part of the team. The Lilywhites have the chance to go all the way in the competition and end the long-standing trophy drought at the club.
