Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is eyeing up a new long-term contract with the Nerazzurri – and the Champions League.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster RAI Sport, via FCInterNews, the 26-year-old outlined his ambitions for the future.

Martinez is soon to wrap up a very successful first season as Inter captain.

The Argentine international inherited the armband from Samir Handanovic last summer.

Martinez led Inter to the twentieth Serie A title in their history. He has so far scored 23 goals in Serie A, and 26 in all competitions for the Nerazzurri.

This is the second league title that Martinez has won with Inter.

And it undoubtedly means even more than the first for the Argentine, because he has done so as captain – and become an even more central player to the team and the project than in the previous title.

Lautaro Martinez: “I Want To Extend Inter Contract & Win Champions League”

Now the question is what’s next for Martinez at Inter.

The Argentine striker is still just 26 years of age. There is a sense that he could still have his best years ahead of them.

And from Martinez’s perspective, he wants to commit to Inter and help the Nerazzurri to even greater heights.

As far as a contract extension goes, Martinez said “Let’s hope so.”

Regarding his becoming an Inter icon, the Argentine said that “That’s what people are saying.”

“When I arrived at Inter, everyone treated me in a very special way,” he continued. “Everyone who works at the club, and also the fans.”

“They helped me. And I’m grateful for everything they’ve done.”

“In football, you never know what will happen,” Martinez contract. “But I’m certain that my family is also doing well here. My desire is to extend my contract with Inter.”

On winning the Serie A title – the twentieth in Inter’s history – Martinez noted that “Two years ago we were close to the second star.”

“This season, it was our main objective.”

“We worked a lot, and suffered a lot. And after all that work and sacrifice, we made it.”

As far as clinching the title against AC Milan in the derby, Martinez said that “It’s become something beautiful and important for us.”

“Winning the second star like that, against Milan and in the city of Milan, was special,” the Inter captain said.

“This had never happened before. We took advantage of our opportunity, and made history for this great club.”

“On the day of the match we went out to train in the rain,” Martinez noted.

“We spent an hour and a half working on the details.”

“We suffered a lot when Milan won the title,” the Inter captain admitted. “So for us it was a special day that we’ll never forget.”

As far as what his trophy cabinet is missing, Martinez noted “Now I have to win the Champions League.”

“Last season we went on a journey in Europe that was massive for us.”

“Reaching the final is certainly very difficult,” Martinez noted.

“There are so many top, top teams. It’s absolutely not easy to get to the final.”

“The whole group played some brilliant matches,” Martinez said of Inter’s Champions League campaign last season.
