After guiding Liverpool to a second Premier League title in his debut season, Arne Slot looked set for a long and successful run at Anfield.

The Dutch coach surprised just about everyone by delivering such success at the first time of asking, and his appointment had long since looked like a masterstroke by the Reds hierarchy.

But six months on from lifting the trophy, doubts have started to creep in over his long-term fit for the job.

Slot has managed just one win in Liverpool’s last six league matches. The team is struggling to find any real identity or form, raising concerns about whether he can turn things around.

One factor working in his favour could be the lack of obvious candidates ready to step in. That situation might change if Xabi Alonso becomes available again.

And with speculation building that Alonso is already feeling pressure at Real Madrid, journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared what he knows about Alonso’s current standing at Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid not looking to replace Xabi Alonso

Alonso was considered the front-runner to replace Jürgen Klopp after the German left Liverpool in 2024.

Known for his quality in midfield, Alonso did an impressive job with Bayer Leverkusen and appeared to be a natural fit at Anfield. But after the 43-year-old pulled himself out of contention, Liverpool turned their attention to Slot.

Since then, Alonso has taken over at Real Madrid. Despite being top of La Liga, there have been some concerns raised by the Spanish media about his approach, and a disappointing loss to Liverpool earlier this month didn’t help matters.

Speaking on his YouTube channel this week though, Romano stated that Real Madrid still back Alonso and have no immediate plans to let him go.

“It’s the international break so obviously we have many stories in the media,” said the reporter. “At the moment I can guarantee to you that the highest people at the club, including president Florentino Perez, maintain total trust in Xabi Alonso. There is nothing changed in terms of relationship, no big issues or big problems.

“There are some problems but this is part of life at a big club. It’s normal you have to sort some situations and this is what’s happening at Real Madrid. They keep trying to fix some issues that they have internally with the manager, but it doesn’t mean they are a complete mess as we see sometimes in the media.”

Why Xabi Alonso could find his way to Liverpool sooner than expected

Managers don’t tend to last long at the Bernabeu when the media spotlight turns negative, and that’s what’s starting to happen for Alonso, even with Real Madrid currently sitting top of La Liga.

There haven’t been any signs suggesting Liverpool are ready to move on from Slot either. According to Rousing The Kop, the club’s hierarchy is still fully behind the manager who led them to a Premier League title in his first season.

Still, it’s clear that things can’t continue as they are. If Slot doesn’t manage to turn things around, there will be increasing pressure on the ownership group to make a change.

If he does become available, Liverpool might find it hard not to make a move. The prospect of bringing him back would likely appeal not just because of his managerial pedigree but also his strong ties with the club.

Alonso has already said he wants a return to Anfield during his coaching career. And while that had seemed like something for much later down the line, changing circumstances could see it happen much sooner than anyone expected.
