Liverpool lost 0-1 to Galatasaray in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday, March 10. Head coach Arne Slot questioned his team's attitude.
Slot believes his players acted as if they had many more opportunities when, from his perspective, they must seize them as if they won't get another.
"When they get a chance, they play as if it’s the last chance in their lives. As for us, we sometimes act as if there are ten more chances coming up. We need to learn from this lesson," the Reds manager said after the match.
The Premier League club lost to a Mario Lemina goal in the seventh minute, assisted by Victor Osimhen.
Slot insisted that his team could have played better, having wasted many opportunities, though he noted he is confident they can achieve a better result at Anfield.
"You play over two games against each other, and now it's half-time, they are 1-0 up," Slot said. "We can do better, I'm 100% sure about that, but even with the game we played, we had enough chances to score goals. We didn't."
"But next week we play at Anfield, and our fans will be so supportive of us. That was the situation for Galatasaray today; they had great support from their fans," he added.
Virgil van Dijk also shared his analysis, which is very similar to his coach's. "We created a lot of chances, but we also missed a lot," he said.
"I think we came very close to scoring in the first half. It's very important to take advantage of these opportunities and convert them into goals. We played against a good team in a high-pressure atmosphere."
