Arsenal bid for Revolution, USMNT GK Matt Turner

United States Men's National Team goalkeeper Zack Steffen signed a new contract with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in November and could soon find himself playing against an American teammate in the English top flight.

Per Jeff Carlisle, James Olley and Taylor Twellman of ESPN, Premier League club Arsenal are looking to acquire New England Revolution and U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner during the January transfer window.

According to Tom Bogert of the official Major League Soccer website, Arsenal bid around $7 million initially with add-ons that could take the price to $10 million for Turner. City agreed to terms on a similar transfer with the Columbus Crew of MLS for Steffen back in 2019.

ESPN adds Turner would have a "significant role" with Arsenal. The Gunners would likely look to move backup Bernd Leno on to a different club so the 27-year-old American could compete with current No. 1 Aaron Ramsdale. This is important, as Turner will be desperate for action ahead of the World Cup that gets underway in November.

Turner signed with the Revolution as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and completed two loan stints with the Richmond Kickers of USL League One before he earned the New England starting job in 2018. He became somewhat of a household name last summer when he earned CONCACAF Gold Cup Golden Glove Award honors as that tournament's top goalkeeper and then won the 2021 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award.

In total, Turner has made 13 USMNT appearances, all of which came in 2021.

Arsenal currently sit sixth in the Premier League table and two points back of West Ham United in the race for UEFA Champions League places.
