Arsenal considering England star as William Saliba injury replacement

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move for former Manchester City defender John Stones following concerns over William Saliba’s fitness.

According to The Sun, the Gunners could consider signing the England international on a free transfer if Saliba’s suspected back injury proves to be a long-term problem.

Saliba, who was forced off during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, could face several months on the sidelines, although Arsenal are yet to confirm the extent of the defender’s injury.

Should the Frenchman’s absence be significant, Arsenal could turn to Stones as an experienced short-term solution.

The 32-year-old became a free agent after leaving Manchester City at the end of June following a decade at the Etihad. Despite an injury-hit campaign at club level, Stones featured prominently for England during the knockout stages of the World Cup, including starts against Norway and Argentina.

A move would also reunite the defender with Mikel Arteta, who worked closely with Stones during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

One factor that could work in Arsenal’s favour is Stones’ reported desire for regular first-team football after making just four starts for City since November before departing the club.

If Saliba’s injury is less severe than feared, Arsenal may decide there is no need to enter the market for another central defender. Equally, with Stones available on a free transfer and bringing vast Premier League and international experience, he could represent an attractive short-term option should reinforcement become necessary.

Whether Arsenal’s reported interest develops into a formal approach remains to be seen over the coming days.
