Jakub Kiwior, now on loan from Arsenal, did not have to wait long for his first appearance with Porto following his move.
The Polish international had a solid spell at the Emirates, especially late last season when he stepped in for the injured Gabriel Magalhaes and performed well.
After spending a couple of years in a backup role, Kiwior was looking to establish himself as a regular starter. That opportunity was not likely to come at Arsenal, given the depth Mikel Arteta already had in central defence.
Kiwior then made the switch to Porto on loan, with an option for a permanent deal. His arrival there also set off a chain reaction which led to Arsenal bringing in Piero Hincapie.
Just days into his time with Porto, Kiwior has already made his debut and turned in an impressive display.
Kiwior has had a busy start to life at Porto, with the defender joining the club before heading off on international duty. He did not have much time to settle in before being called upon for his debut.
The Dragoes were far from their best, grinding out a 1-0 win thanks to a Samu Aghehowa penalty. Still, Kiwior’s performance stood out.
Mais Futebol gave him four stars out of five for his display, and he also picked up an impressive 7.9 rating from Sofascore, the highest of any player in the match.
The Polish defender won all four of his ground duels and the only aerial duel he contested. He also finished with one tackle, two clearances, and one blocked shot.
He looked calm in possession too, completing 96% of his passes. It was an encouraging start that showed what he can bring to Porto this season.
Even though Kiwior left Arsenal with the intention of finding more regular playing time, he did not expect to be involved quite so soon after joining Porto.
Speaking to O Jogo after the match, he said: “I wasn’t expecting to be a starter, but I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’m happy to have played this game. FC Porto is a great team, and it’s an honour for those of us who are here to play for this club.”
The defender could not have asked for much more from his first outing, and he will be hoping it is just the beginning of a solid run in the side.
