Arsenal officially sign Manchester United winger

Arsenal are coming into this Premier League season as champions, for the first time in 22 years, following the title winning campaign last season.

The Gooners, aiming to retain the title, won 3-0 against Coventry City last weekend and are set to face Aston Villa on Monday evening in their second league fixture.

Away from matches, the club have spent the summer strengthening in key positions as they look to move closer to their objectives.

That recruitment has seen the club make five signings, including that for Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, although time still remains for the side to complete deals.

Now, Arsenal have completed the signing of Manchester United winger James Scanlon with the side taking to their official website to announce the news.

Speaking after signing for the Premier League champions, the 19-year-old said: “It’s a pleasure to be here, I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve been waiting to get this over the line, so I’m buzzing to be here.

“My family are massive to me, so to have them here for this special day is only going to make it better.”

Talking about his motivations behind signing, the winger said: “I think you can see where the club’s at, [it’s] really positive and I think it’s only going to get better.

“You can see that everyone here is hungrier for more, hungrier to get better and I think that’s something I believe I can add to and want to be a part of as well.

“I’m a creative player, I like to score goals, assist, so hopefully I can excite players who watch me, and that’s what I’m here to do really.”

Opening up on his previous experience, James Scanlon added: “It was different to what I’ve been used to, but just as valuable.”

“Learning how senior dressing rooms are, what the standards are like day-in day-out.

“[I learned] what it can be like in a league like League Two, which is not always easy, so it was a massive learning for me, but positive on the whole.”

The 19-year-old was at Swindon Town last season on a loan basis, where he made six appearances.

Scanlon leaves Manchester United after coming through the club’s Academy, and will now join up with Arsenal’s Academy.
