After crashing out of the Champions League, Arsenal now have a point to prove as they travel to Anfield in the latest round of Premier League matches. Here is our Arsenal predicted lineup vs Liverpool.
In their 2-1 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain, Arteta played his strongest possible Arsenal starting eleven.
David Raya started and saved a penalty from Vitinha.
His defence was made up of Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, Jakub Kiwior and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey and Declan Rice played in the middle.
Arsenal’s forward line was led by Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli.
Arsenal have one win, one draw and three losses in their last five matches.
The Gunners have failed to win at Anfield in their past 14 encounters against Liverpool.
This time around, Arsenal not only have a point to prove against this year’s Premier League Champions, but also a second place spot to defend. Manchester City, Newcastle United and Chelsea are all within four points of the Gunners.
Arteta’s side were forced into long throws into the box in the late stages of the Paris Saint-Germain match as desperation set in. But earlier in the tie, they created several clear-cut chances that they should have finished to take them into the Champions League final.
The return of Thomas Partey allowed Arsenal more tactical freedom, deploying Merino up front. Partey will no doubt be called on again against Liverpool to sit deeper and fulfil the more defensive duties in midfield and to allow the Gunners to pivot between defence and attack.
Arteta did not give any new updates on injuries in his latest press conference, but there were still some updates on the Arsenal squad.
The Gunners boss explained why Ethan Nwaneri hasn’t featured as much lately, saying: “There are moments and players are used more and less and he’s played a lot, he’s played probably more than anybody expected for sure and in the last few games it’s because of the games and the context we decided not to play him that much, it can change very quickly.”
Jorginho returned to the Arsenal bench in midweek after suffering a punctured lung. This helps bring down the number of the club’s sidelined stars, which still include Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Magalhaes, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
