Having Bukayo Saka fit and back on the pitch was a huge boost for Arsenal fans, especially as he looked sharp right from the start against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
It used to be Ben White who formed the most dangerous link-up with Saka, and plenty of left-backs in the Premier League learned that lesson the hard way.
But with Jurrien Timber now making his mark in North London, it is clear that Saka is building another strong partnership, this time with the Dutch defender.
Dan Burn was left with quite a challenge trying to handle them both on Sunday and, early on, Arsenal found plenty of space to exploit down their right side.
In fact, Mikel Arteta’s side pushed Newcastle all over the pitch, with new signing Eberechi Eze showing real promise in a central role as well.
Eze has not often played as a number 10 for Arsenal, especially not in bigger matches.
However, with Martin Odegaard sidelined, the job fell to him against Newcastle, and he took full advantage of the chance.
After the match at St James’ Park, Saka had some positive things to say about his England teammate while speaking to Stadium Astro.
“Yeah I think he was unstoppable today at times, he was really good,” he began by saying.
“I was just speaking to him now in the changing room, you know, that first chance – there are not many keepers that will save that.
“That would have topped it off, but even without the goal today, he was really really good for us and he’s a really exciting signing and I’m happy to have him in our team.”
Arsenal fans were caught off guard when Ethan Nwaneri was left out of the squad, despite travelling with the team to Tyneside.
With Eze taking up the central role and Odegaard available from the bench, the decision was made to leave Nwaneri out of the matchday squad.
Max Dowman did make the bench, but he is currently being viewed more as cover for Saka than an option for the number 10 position.
TBR Football understands that Arteta had discussed a more central role for Nwaneri during recent contract negotiations.
But since Eze’s arrival, those chances may now be harder to come by for Nwaneri in the short term.
Still, with a packed schedule ahead, there will be opportunities for all three players – Eze, Nwaneri, and Dowman – to get minutes on the pitch.
It highlights just how much depth Arteta now has at his disposal – something he has been working towards for some time.
