For some time now, Arsenal have been craving a top striker. He should have arrived last summer, but did not.
Now, with Viktor Gyökeres finally signed, the Gunners appear to have filled that gap.
But before the Swede’s arrival, it seemed every striker under the sun was linked with a move to the Emirates. One of those names was Charalampos Kostoulas.
The 18-year-old had a standout breakthrough season with Olympiacos and was briefly mentioned in connection with Arsenal. However, those rumours never turned into a formal bid.
Still, the Greek talent has shown signs of admiration for the club.
Brighton were the ones who acted, securing Kostoulas for £29.78 million. While the Seagulls landed the youngster, Gooners will be interested in what the teenager had to say about Arsenal.
Speaking via Brighton’s official YouTube channel, when asked which Premier League stadium he was most excited to play at, Kostoulas replied:
“I think I would say against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.”
From that answer alone, it is clear that had Arsenal made a move, the striker might not have needed much convincing.
But for now, he is at Brighton.
Arsenal will host Brighton at the Emirates on 27th December. Kostoulas may well have that date circled. Whether he shines remains to be seen, but the Premier League is a challenging environment, especially for young players.
Some buckle under pressure in England, while others rise and become stars. Should Kostoulas impress, Arsenal may revisit their interest down the line.
Gyökeres is 27, and one day the Gunners will need to find his successor. Perhaps Brighton’s new forward could be just that. After all, Ben White made the same journey, and Gyökeres himself once wore Brighton colours.
One worth watching closely through this season?
