Ethan Nwaneri’s loan spell at Borussia Dortmund has taken an unexpected turn after an encouraging start, with the young midfielder now struggling to secure regular playing time at the German club. Dortmund are competing for the Bundesliga title and have a squad filled with established stars, making competition for places particularly demanding.

Nwaneri joined BVB on loan because regular opportunities were unlikely to be available at Arsenal this season. The Gunners wanted him to gain valuable experience, develop his game and return with greater maturity and confidence after spending a campaign playing senior football elsewhere.

His early performances suggested the move was working well. The attacking midfielder made a strong impression and looked capable of becoming an important contributor across competitions. However, his involvement has gradually decreased, raising questions about how much he can develop if he continues to spend so much time on the sidelines.

Nwaneri’s playing time has decreased

According to Give Me Sport, Nwaneri’s minutes have become increasingly limited, with the midfielder spending the entire match against Bayern Munich on the bench. That was another indication of how his situation has changed since arriving in Germany.

He has also managed just 44 minutes in total across Dortmund’s last four matches. Such limited involvement is a significant concern for a player who moved abroad specifically to enjoy regular first-team football and continue his development.

Dortmund have several talented players competing for attacking positions, and Nwaneri must convince the coaching staff that he deserves a more prominent role. His early performances showed that he could contribute, but maintaining that level is essential if he wants to remain part of the team’s plans.

Arsenal will be monitoring his progress

Nwaneri has the potential to become one of the most important players at Arsenal in the future, which is why his development during this loan spell matters. The Gunners sent him to Germany to gain experience that would be difficult to obtain while competing for places in their own squad.

However, if he cannot secure regular minutes at Dortmund, there will be questions about whether he can return to Arsenal next season and immediately earn a place in the team. The competition at the Emirates is also considerable, meaning he cannot expect opportunities simply because he has returned from a loan.

The midfielder must now work to improve his situation, impress in training and convince Dortmund that he deserves more responsibility. Regaining a starting place would give his development an important boost and help ensure that this loan spell delivers the experience Arsenal originally wanted him to gain.
