Arsenal’s newfound depth shines despite another Martin Odegaard setback

Arsenal showcased the strength of their revamped squad with a convincing 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, even as captain Martin Odegaard was forced off with another injury concern.

The Norwegian midfielder lasted just 18 minutes at the City Ground after colliding with teammate Jurrien Timber, appearing to aggravate the same shoulder problem that troubled him last month.

He was replaced by teenager Ethan Nwaneri, raising fresh doubts over his availability ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League opener against Athletic Club on Tuesday and next weekend’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Despite losing their influential playmaker, Arsenal controlled the contest. Summer signing Martin Zubimendi delivered a standout performance, scoring twice, first with a fierce volley then with a precise header, to put the visitors firmly in command.

Fellow new arrival Viktor Gyokeres added a third, finishing off a flowing move created by Eberechi Eze, who has quickly settled into the side after his transfer from Crystal Palace.

The result was significant not only for the scoreline but also for the way Arsenal coped with a mounting injury list. Alongside Odegaard, the Gunners were without William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, yet still produced a dominant display.

Noni Madueke, starting in Saka’s place, impressed on the right wing with his direct running as he continued his rapid rise for both club and country.

Arsenal’s new-look forward line looked dangerous throughout, with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli coming off the bench to add further attacking strength. At the back, 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera deputized effectively for Saliba, as he has in recent weeks.

"They (the players) have to play 70 or 74 games throughout the season,” manager Mikel Arteta told reporters. “It's never been done. When the intensity goes that high, they are not going to be able to sustain that, so you need more players. The standards have raised. We need better players and there's no secret."

New faces contributing to Arsenal's improvement

In previous seasons, Arsenal’s title challenges often faltered when injuries struck key players, exposing a lack of reliable depth. This summer’s recruitment appears to have changed that narrative.

Zubimendi and Eze have added quality and versatility in midfield and Gyokeres provides a focal point in attack, while Madueke and Mosquera bring balance and competition across the pitch.

With a grueling run of fixtures ahead, Arsenal look better equipped to handle setbacks without losing momentum. For the first time in years, the Gunners can call upon genuine depth, a resource that may prove as decisive as any single star in their pursuit of silverware this season.
