Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hospitalized with malaria

Arsenal star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed last Sunday's Premier League win over Sheffield United and Thursday's UEFA Europa League match at Slavia Prague due to an illness that isn't related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As noted by Reuters (h/t ESPN), the 31-year-old shared via Instagram that he contracted malaria while on international duty with Gabon last month and required a stint in the hospital:

"Unfortunately I contracted Malaria whilst being on national team duty in Gabon a few weeks ago," Aubameyang captioned the post. "I’ve spent a few days in hospital this week but I’m already feeling much better every day, thanks to the great doctors that detected and treated the virus so quickly. I wasn’t really feeling myself the last couple weeks but will be back stronger than ever soon!"

Per Sky Sports, it's unknown when Aubameyang will be cleared to return to the Arsenal squad or the lineup. Arsenal sit ninth in the Premier League table and will face Fulham (18th) this coming Sunday.

As Jason Owens wrote for Yahoo Sports, Aubameyang twice featured for Arsenal since returning from the international break and, presumably, becoming infected with malaria. Malaria is a "flu-like illness" that is commonly spread through parasitic mosquito bites and is not contagious via person-to-person contact like COVID-19.
