Arteta explains decision to sub off Gyokeres on his debut

Viktor Gyökeres made his debut for Arsenal in their league clash against Manchester United, featuring for 60 minutes before being substituted. As the club’s new first-choice striker, expectations surrounding his performances are high, with supporters eager to see him lead the line across an entire season.

Arteta Explains the Substitution

Mikel Arteta was asked whether it had always been his intention to substitute Gyökeres after 60 minutes. The Arsenal manager responded by clarifying the decision, emphasising the demands of the match and the tactical adjustments required. Speaking via Arsenal Media, Arteta said: “Well, it depended on how the game developed. Every game brings different challenges, opportunities. I think the game was very demanding physically, became really, really open for different reasons, and we decided, that at that moment, he needed to come off and we had Kai on the bench to come and change the game.”

His remarks suggest that the decision was not pre-determined, but rather a response to the intensity of the fixture and the need for fresh options in attack.
