Managers and players should ideally focus on what happens on the pitch and at the training ground. However, when Arsenal are criticised over issues away from football, Mikel Arteta can find himself drawn into the discussion.

That is the situation Arteta faces as he prepares his side for this weekend’s match against Nottingham Forest. The questions come days after Arsenal announced plans to cut up to 60 permanent staff roles, bringing the club’s internal decisions into the spotlight.

The club recently hired an auditing firm to examine roles across the organisation and identify positions it considered unnecessary. That review has now been completed, and Arsenal are expected to act on its recommendations.

Arteta responds to proposed job cuts

The changes could leave several employees without jobs. The timing has also attracted attention because the announcement came shortly after Arsenal made Arteta the Premier League’s highest-paid manager, prompting questions about the club’s financial priorities.

Arteta was asked for his view and explained what the club’s decision-makers had told him about the review. Speaking via ESPN, he said:

“First, this question is not for me. “It was explained to me about the exercise, and the analysis that has been done across the club, and with the intention always to evolve to improve.”

Club says changes are aimed at improvement

Arteta indicated that he had been briefed on the process, while making clear that he did not see the matter as his responsibility to explain publicly. His comments came as attention turned to the plans and their potential effect on staff.

Arsenal now face the task of implementing the review’s recommendations, with the prospect of job losses likely to remain a sensitive issue for the club and those affected.

For Arteta, the immediate focus is preparing his players for Nottingham Forest, although the questions show how matters away from the pitch can become part of a manager’s media duties. The proposed cuts have created an uncomfortable backdrop to the build-up, especially given the timing of his reported pay rise.
