Charlie Mulgrew has encouraged Greg Taylor to stay at Celtic and challenge Kieran Tierney for a spot in the starting lineup…

He also believes Taylor has what it takes to potentially win that contest for a starting role.

The 27 year-old may have made his final appearance for Celtic during their penalty shootout loss to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final, with a new contract still not agreed and appearing increasingly improbable.

With Kieran Tierney set to return to Celtic on a pre-contract from Arsenal this summer, Taylor might be hesitant, knowing Tierney would likely be the preferred choice when fit and available.

However, Mulgrew notes that the demands of a long season with domestic and European competitions to contend with mean the team will need depth in the left-back position – particularly given the injury concerns surrounding the returning Tierney.

“As a Celtic fan I would love to see Greg stick around”

Speaking via Daily Record, the former Celtic defender said: “As a Celtic fan I would love to see Greg stick around. He does that inverted role brilliantly and between him and Tierney they can still have enough games between them over a season.”

“It’s unrealistic to play every single game at Celtic because there’s 60 games in a season so there’s plenty there for the two of them. You imagine KT will be looking to stay fit, but you don’t know how realistic that is.”

Mulgrew added: “He’s probably not going to play 60 games at the level so I’d love to see Greg Taylor stay because he offers a lot for the changing room. Tierney will still need that competition to know that he’s not just going to be there every game.”

“You just never know, Taylor could get the jersey. Football’s a funny game sometimes.”

“Greg would provide that perfectly and he’s got the determination and attitude to be in the team. He’ll want to fight to be in there and you just never know, Taylor could get the jersey. Football’s a funny game sometimes.”
