Aside from the permanent additions of Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso, Tottenham Hotspur have barely done any activity in the summer transfer window.
New boss Thomas Frank will have been fully aware of the job that awaits him in North London, though he may not have expected such little transfer movement. The Danish tactician needs to be backed heavily in the transfer market if Spurs are to avoid another underwhelming season in the Premier League.
A new attacker has to be the club’s priority after the struggles the Lilywhites faced in unlocking teams many times last season. Club captain Son Heung-min struggled to produce consistent displays and it feels like he is past his best now. Wilson Odobert spent a large chunk of his debut season on the sidelines, while Tel blew hot and cold during his five-month loan spell from Bayern Munich.
Brennan Johnson enjoyed a strong campaign, netting 18 goals to emerge as the club’s top scorer. However, the lack of competition and cover saw the Welshman go missing in plenty of games, something that Frank must address in this transfer window. As such, a right-winger should be prioritised by the Hotspur Way chiefs.
Reports from May suggested that Tottenham have been keeping tabs on AS Monaco’s highly-rated winger Maghnes Akliouche. The 23-year-old enjoyed a fantastic 2024/25 campaign in Ligue 1, bagging five goals and 10 assists in 32 outings. AS Monaco have often had to cash in on their best players in the past, and it now seems increasingly likely that France Under-23 international will be the latest to become a victim of that transfer model.
According to a report from French publication L’Equipe, AS Monaco want in the region of €70m to sell Maghnes Akliouche this summer amid interest from Tottenham, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Manchester City.
Akliouche is a prodigious young talent with a bright future, and he could be a vital player for Tottenham in the future. At 23, he could prove to be a solid long-term investment at White Hart Lane; however, regardless of his high potential, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is unlikely to sanction around €70m for an unproven talent like the France youth international.
Indeed, we have seen gifted young players with big reputation arrive in the Premier League from different leagues and struggle to adapt to its intensity and pace. Rather spending a big fee on the Monaco star, Tottenham would be wise to go all out for West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, who has been playing in the Premier League for two years and can be trusted to make an immediate impact for Frank’s side next term.
