‘As of today…’: Romano confirms INEOS are ‘in the process’ of granting Amorim his desired signing before pre-season

Manchester United fans would’ve likely expected to have more than one signing at Ruben Amorim’s disposal at this stage of the transfer window.

Yet, in the first week of June, INEOS only have Matheus Cunha to show for their efforts in Amorim’s first summer as head coach.

While Cunha undoubtedly poses as a thrilling addition to have in the ranks at Old Trafford, he alone is not enough to transform a side that finished 15th-placed last season into one that will be competing among the Champions League places.

United’s sights are firmly set on in-demand Bryan Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo, 25, would certainly aid the quest, and he’s expected to be next through the door.

Targeting Premier League-proven talents such as the attacking duo is a law that should’ve perhaps come into play in the last few seasons.

Cunha (12 goals and seven assists) and Mbeumo (20 goals and eight assists) registered 47 goal contributions between them in the top flight last season, while it goes without saying that the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to meet the standards required of them up front.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the Brentford talisman will join, even if he has made public his desire to join the 20-time champions over the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

INEOS prioritising Mbeumo over any other targets

United’s second bid of £62.5 million – the amount they paid for Cunha, albeit in instalments – was rebuffed by the Bees last week, meaning there is still work to do in negotiations. Reports have suggested Amorim wants Mbeumo at Carrington in time for the start of pre-season on July 7, allowing him the full preparation period to get to grips with his role in the squad before they embark on their upcoming tour.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano confirmed late on Monday evening that agreeing a deal for the Cameroonian international is INEOS’ top priority in the coming days.

“Now as of today, Manchester United’s focus is on closing the Bryan Mbeumo deal as soon as possible. Manchester United are in the process of that,” said Romano on his YouTube channel.
