Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements has remained one of the club’s biggest priorities throughout the summer transfer window.
While business is beginning to gather pace at Old Trafford, the recruitment team continue to assess several options across Europe in case further additions are required.
One of their targets has now taken another step towards becoming one of the most sought-after midfielders on the continent.
Fresh developments in Italy have only increased the competition for his signature.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma have reportedly rejected a £33.8 million (€40 million) offer from Atletico Madrid for midfielder Manu Kone, making it clear they will not entertain bids below their valuation.
The Serie A side have informed interested clubs that the French international will only be allowed to leave if an offer of around £50.7 million (€60 million) is submitted.
That stance has also caught the attention of Premier League clubs.
Manchester United are continuing to monitor Kone’s situation after receiving Roma’s updated asking price.
Kone’s stock has risen significantly following his impressive performances for both club and country.
The midfielder has become an increasingly important figure for France and is preparing to face Spain in the World Cup semi-finals.
Manchester United’s interest in the Roma star is nothing new.
The Red Devils have tracked the 25-year-old for some time and remain admirers of his profile as they continue reshaping their midfield.
United’s summer plans have already taken a different direction in recent days.
Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos is expected to become the club’s first signing after completing a medical ahead of a £50 million move to Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson appeared to be virtually complete before reports claimed Manchester United pulled the plug after concerns emerged during the Brazilian’s medical assessment.
Despite that setback, United remain determined to strengthen in midfield and are still understood to be preparing a £42.6 million (€50 million) offer for Manu Kone.
However, with Roma refusing to lower their demands and Atletico Madrid already seeing one bid rejected, any move for the Frenchman is unlikely to come cheaply.
