Manchester United have made several important changes across the first team and academy this summer as preparations continue for the new season.

While much of the attention has centred around Michael Carrick’s new signings, there has also been movement involving some of the club’s brightest young prospects.

The academy has long been regarded as one of the strongest in world football, but not every talented youngster finds a pathway to Old Trafford’s first team.

With opportunities often limited, some emerging players choose to continue their development elsewhere in search of regular progression.

One highly-rated goalkeeper has now done exactly that.

Manchester United goalkeeper signs for Athletic Club

According to TheSecretScout on X, 16-year-old goalkeeper Darlington Osuchukwu has completed a move to Athletic Bilbao after his Manchester United contract expired on 30 June.

The youngster originally joined United at the age of 13 from Spanish youth side Gazte Berriak and spent four years developing within the club’s academy system.

Osuchukwu had built a reputation as one of the academy’s promising goalkeepers, with coaches viewing him as a player possessing significant long-term potential.

The move also marks a return to Spain, where he first began his football journey before making the switch to Manchester.

His departure had already been confirmed by the player himself after he shared an emotional farewell message on Instagram, thanking Manchester United’s coaches, teammates and staff for their support throughout his time at the club.

In the post, Darlington Osuchukwu explained that leaving Old Trafford had been an incredibly difficult decision, but one he believed was the right step for his career as he prepares to begin a new chapter.

Although United were keen to keep developing the teenager, the pathway to senior football has become increasingly competitive, particularly following Senne Lammens’ emergence as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and the arrival of Karl Darlow this summer.

Athletic Bilbao have now secured the services of the young shot-stopper, giving Osuchukwu the chance to continue his development at one of Spain’s most respected clubs as he looks to fulfil the potential that first earned him a move to Manchester United’s academy.
