Atlanta United is on the verge of re-hiring former manager Gerardo Martino, according to Doug Robinson of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“Tata” Martino most recently managed Inter Miami. He stepped down from his role at Miami in Nov. 2024 due to “personal reasons.”
Martino led Atlanta United to its first MLS Cup championship in 2018. Atlanta’s managerial post has been vacant since Ronny Deila was sacked two weeks ago.
Deila only won one match over his final 18 matches in charge of Atlanta.
Atlanta spent big to back Delia, notably signing striker Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough for $22 million plus add-ons. Latte Lath’s transfer broke the MLS transfer record until Los Angeles FC paid $26.5 million to acquire Son Heung-min from Tottenham.
Now, Martino is set to return to Atlanta after previously serving as the first manager in the club’s history. His re-hiring should go down as a popular move in “The Peach State,” given his previous success at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Atlanta is in need of a resurgence after finishing the 2025 season 14th in the Eastern Conference and 29th overall among all MLS clubs. Only D.C. United managed a worse record.
Notably, Martino managed Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, Barcelona and the Argentina national team.
His next challenge will be reigniting a squad that has only reached the MLS Cup playoffs three times in the last six seasons.
Atlanta United supporters are hoping that Martino can restore the club to its past glories.
