Real Madrid's hopes of winning back-to-back Copa del Rey titles for the first time since the 1970s came to an end on Thursday night.

The reigning champions lost 4-2 away at city rivals Atletico Madrid after extra time in the round of 16.

Samuel Lino scored from close range to put Atleti ahead before Real equalized on the stroke of half-time courtesy of a Jan Oblak own goal.

A mix-up between Andriy Lunin and Antonio Rudiger then allowed Alvaro Morata to put the home side back in front.

Joselu hit back for Real to force extra time but goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme saw Atleti prevail.

This was the second time in nine days that a Madrid derby had gone to extra time - after Real beat Atleti 5-3 in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de Espana last week.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Barcelona won 3-1 at Unionistas.

Alvaro Gomez gave the third-tier side a shock lead before goals from Ferran Torres, Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde saw Barca progress to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
