Atletico Madrid want Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez amid interest from Saudi Pro League clubs during the upcoming summer transfer window. Atletico are active in the transfer market to bolster their attacking department with a lot of shifts within their squad.
Meanwhile, Liverpool secured the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season as the head coach, without making many signings. However, the Reds displayed moments of vulnerability, which cost them the cup competition during the campaign, as recurring mistakes occurred.
Slot opted to play Diogo Jota as the first-choice number nine and also used winger Luis Diaz at that position. Nunez struggled to adjust to Slot’s demands as the Dutch boss made tactical tweaks to make the team more efficient.
Despite the constant criticism, the Uruguayan international enjoyed a somewhat stable contribution with goals and assists throughout his Liverpool tenure. However, Nunez failed to live up to the £85 million (including add-ons) that Liverpool paid to sign him from Benfica.
The 25-year-old has made 46 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists. The limited game time remains a mitigating factor in Nunez’s struggle this season, as most appearances came from the bench.
Nevertheless, the Uruguayan’s quality is well-established, and he can reach his full potential at a club that complements his strengths. During the January transfer window, Saudi Pro League clubs made a move on Nunez, highlighting that he has numerous suitors.
According to Cadena SER, Atletico want Nunez from Liverpool to bolster their attack as his summer departure is a certainty, while Saudi Pro League clubs continue to pursue him. A mutually beneficial deal for all parties can financially help Liverpool and also rejuvenate Nunez’s career in a different country.
The Uruguayan’s struggle with language has also played a big factor, and he could eliminate that problem in Spain. At the same time, Liverpool will try to recoup most of the £85 million they paid for the Uruguayan, given Nunez’s age, quality and the number of clubs interested in his services.
