Manchester United’s youth setup continues to shine under Ruben Amorim, with several academy prospects catching the eye in recent weeks.

The Portuguese coach has been eager to promote young talent, blending youth with experience to inject energy and hunger into his evolving squad.

Opportunities have emerged for rising stars to train alongside senior professionals at Carrington.

Amorim’s focus on youth has already paid dividends, with several young players making notable progress in United’s Under-21 side.

The club’s emphasis on development is once again bearing fruit, and one young defender’s rapid rise has just reached an extraordinary milestone.

James Overy, one of United’s most exciting prospects, has earned a surprise call-up to the senior Australia squad for their upcoming fixtures against Venezuela and Colombia.

The 17-year-old, who turns 18 this weekend, is set to link up with the Socceroos after catching the eye of national team boss Tony Popovic.

Popovic announced 11 inclusions in his latest squad, with Overy’s selection marking another key step in his rapid progression since joining United.

The young defender impressed scouts and coaches alike at the Under-20 World Cup earlier this year, showcasing his composure and intelligence beyond his years.

Overy’s journey has been far from straightforward.

After joining United on a scholarship deal in the summer of 2024, he penned his first professional contract just a month later.

However, his debut campaign was derailed by an eight-month injury layoff.

Since returning, the teenager has established himself as a regular under Darren Fletcher, featuring consistently for the Under-18s and breaking into the Under-21s setup in both Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.

Ruben Amorim recognised Overy’s potential early, inviting him to train with the first team in May ahead of United’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

Those sessions appear to have accelerated his growth, preparing him for the step up to international football.

Popovic explained his decision, saying, “It’s another opportunity to expand the depth and introduce players who have not yet been exposed to the Socceroos environment or senior international football.

“We also welcome back some familiar faces, from Australia and abroad.”

Australia will face Venezuela in Houston on 14 November before meeting Colombia in New York, as they continue preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

For James Overy, it’s a dream come true, and another example of Manchester United’s academy continuing to produce talent capable of reaching the global stage.
