With the La Liga calendar speeding up, FC Barcelona had to play two games against its Spanish rivals in the last week of September. The first game was an away match against Real Oviedo. The second, a home meeting with another Real, this time Sociedad. How did the Catalan giants do in both of them?

Real Oviedo VS FC Barcelona

The first half of the game between Oviedo and Barcelona was a nightmare for Hansi Flick’s team. The players couldn’t seem to coordinate a good action and didn’t find the chance to score even one goal against the statistically weaker team. On top of that, after a big mistake from the goalkeeper, Joan Garcia, they conceded one in the 33rd minute. With the scales of victory tipping towards them, Oveido spent the remaining minutes blocking their net from all attacks.

As is often the case with Barcelona, they came back much stronger after the break. Eric Garcia equalized the score in the 56th minute, breathing life back into the team. Flick went on to make a few substitutions that paid off almost immediately. Only four minutes after he let Robert Lewandowski onto the field, the Polish striker put Barcelona in the lead. Then, with two minutes of standard time to go, Ronald Araujo put the final nail in Oveido’s coffin.

The final score was 3-1. Even though the start looked quite terrible for Blaugrana, they managed to make up for it with a stellar second half, adding three points to their La Liga tally.

FC Barcelona VS Real Sociedad

Barcelona’s second game of the week began similarly to the first. Although this time, Blaugrana was the team clearly dominating the match, the first goal belonged to their rivals. It was scored by Alvaro Odrizola, 30 minutes after the first whistle.

This time, Barca was eager not to go into the break at a loss. Invigorated by the disadvantage they had found themselves in, the team pushed harder than before and managed to work out a perfect goal-scoring opportunity. Assisted by Marcus Rashford, Joules Kounde put the ball in Sociedad’s net, equalizing the score.

The final goal of the match, the one that put Barcelona in the lead and allowed it to finish the day with the coveted three points, was scored by the ever-reliable Lewandowski. He managed a beautiful header after a pass from the young Lamine Yamal, who returned to the team after missing a few matches due to an injury. The game ended with a well-deserved 2:1 for the home team.

How Does That Impact The League?

While winning the two matches put Barcelona in a great position in the La Liga, it didn’t have to mean that the team would jump to first place in the standings. Before the two-game week, Real Madrid was the team occupying the position, with no matches lost or drawn. Since Barcelona ended one game in a draw, Real Madrid’s double-win would mean second place for the Catalans.

After the first round of games, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid winning their respective matches, Los Blancos were still in the lead. Things changed over the weekend. While Blugrana managed to defeat their opponents, Real lost the Madrid derby 5-2. This meant that, with 19 points to their name, Barcelona jumped ahead of their immediate rivals.
