Barcelona eye January move for Lisandro Martinez
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Lisandro Martinez has become a controversial figure at Manchester United following his extraordinary public criticism of the club’s hierarchy earlier this month.

The Argentine defender openly challenged director of football Jason Wilcox after United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid.

“I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest,” Martinez declared, questioning whether Michael Carrick had received sufficient backing.

His comments sparked an enormous backlash, prompting the World Cup winner to issue a statement explaining his frustration.

However, Martinez remains an important figure at Old Trafford.

Signed from Ajax in 2022 for approximately £49 million, the 28-year-old established himself as a technically gifted, aggressive centre-back.

Despite standing just 5ft 9in, Martinez excels through intelligent positioning, anticipation and uncompromising tackling.

His left-footed passing also allows United to progress possession from defence, while his versatility offers another option in defensive midfield.

However, recurring injuries have disrupted his career, including a serious cruciate ligament injury in February 2025.

United’s defensive problems have continued this season, with Carrick’s side sitting 16th in the Premier League.

Now, Martinez’s uncertain future has attracted significant attention elsewhere in Europe.

Barcelona consider January move for Lisandro Martinez

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have identified Lisandro Martinez as a potential January defensive reinforcement.

Hansi Flick’s side suffered consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, exposing vulnerabilities in their backline.

Barcelona consider Martinez a relatively attainable option because his United contract expires in June 2027, although the Red Devils hold an extension option until 2028.

His recent criticism of United’s hierarchy could further complicate his future, while his injury history remains a concern.

Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni are also admired, alongside Real Betis defender Natan.

Barcelona’s interest follows their pursuit of United youngster JJ Gabriel, whose departure has recently been blocked by the club.

No formal offer for Martinez has been reported, with United yet to indicate any willingness to sell.
