Barcelona have developed a clear strategy for Marcus Rashford, after bringing the Manchester United forward in on loan with an option to buy over the summer.
Despite Rashford’s improved form since moving to Spain, Manchester United haven’t shifted their position regarding his future at the club.
While Barcelona are seeing real value in Rashford, there are several factors keeping Manchester United from changing their stance, wages being one of them. But in Spain, the feeling around him has clearly shifted as he’s looked more and more like a real threat in La Liga.
Rashford has played 26 times for Barcelona this season, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists. His focus for the rest of the campaign will be on trying to secure a regular spot in Hansi Flick’s starting lineup instead of being used mainly when rotation is needed.
Even so, Flick appears pleased with what Rashford has brought so far, and discussions about his future aren’t too far off.
Barcelona are currently four points ahead of Real Madrid in the La Liga title race, giving Marcus Rashford a real chance to compete for his first domestic league title, something he never managed during his time at Manchester United.
Reports have emerged suggesting that Barcelona are looking to keep Rashford beyond this season, with Alfredo Martinez claiming the club intends to make the move permanent for around £26 million (€30m).
While it seems unlikely that Rashford will return to Old Trafford regardless of who is in charge, his contract with United does run until the summer of 2028. The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for them since January 2025, having been sent on loan to Aston Villa before moving to Spain.
Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Barcelona have informed Rashford and his representatives of their desire to keep him. However, Romano notes there’s no guarantee over the buy option in Rashford’s deal, which will depend on the club’s financial situation come summer.
This situation could work in United’s favour as Ineos looks to reduce the wage bill under Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Even though Barcelona are covering part of Rashford’s salary while he’s out on loan, he remains one of the highest earners at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford is set to make his second appearance in El Clásico when Barcelona host Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
This match gives Rashford and his teammates a chance to secure their first piece of silverware this season.
Rashford also has the opportunity to win his first trophy with the club since joining on loan from Manchester United.
But for Flick, the bigger goals remain winning La Liga and making a deep run in the Champions League.
With both league and European ambitions still in play, it’s shaping up to be an important few months ahead for Rashford.
