Manchester United’s summer planning is already being shaped by uncertainty surrounding several high-profile forwards – and Marcus Rashford’s situation is once again taking centre stage.
The 28-year-old is currently on loan at FC Barcelona after enduring a turbulent spell at Old Trafford, particularly under recently sacked manager Ruben Amorim.
As previously reported, Rashford’s resurgence began during his temporary stint at Aston Villa in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, where he rediscovered form.
Now, according to Spanish La Liga expert Guillem Balague speaking to Manchester Evening News, Barcelona initially viewed Rashford’s deal as more than just a straightforward squad addition.
Balague explained that the Catalan giants saw value in the loan-to-buy structure, with an option set at around £26m (€30m).
Internally, there were two clear possibilities: keep him if he impressed – or buy him regardless and potentially sell him back to the English Premier League for a profit.
The thinking was rooted in opportunity.
Barcelona figures were reportedly surprised Manchester United sanctioned a move at that valuation, believing Rashford’s strong domestic market appeal remained strong.
With Premier League clubs constantly seeking proven attacking talent, the idea of activating the clause and entertaining offers was not dismissed.
Financial pressures have played their part.
Barcelona’s ongoing economic constraints – including Camp Nou redevelopment costs and wage restructuring – have required calculated transfer strategies.
Generating quick resale value would align with that approach.
However, Balague now suggests the mood has shifted.
Following Rashford’s impressive form in Spain, Barcelona are increasingly inclined to keep him, although they would ideally prefer to renegotiate the fee downward.
Manchester United, though, are unlikely to budge on the agreed terms.
For United, the possibility of Rashford re-joining the Premier League – potentially via Barcelona – adds a dramatic twist to a saga that once appeared straightforward.
A permanent exit may still be the likeliest outcome, but as Balague’s insight to the Manchester Evening News makes clear, the door to a shock domestic return has not completely closed.
