Amid this news that PSG are taking another Barcelona player, Robin Bairner, chief editor at Football Transfers, shared the reason why he believes Fernández wanted out of the Catalan side and reportedly chose the Ligue 1 club as his next destination.
“The Barcelona midfield is stacked,” Bairner said on the latest Ensemble PSG Podcast. “It has loads of depth. Frenkie de Jong looks like he’s going to stay. There are lots of young players there. It looks complicated for Dro to break into that team as much as he might like immediately.
“I think there’s going to be more opportunities at PSG, and I think that’s probably one of the big attractions to PSG. Now, there was interest from the Premier League. Chelsea and Manchester City were notably interested in them.
“The English press actually had both of those clubs ahead of PSG until relatively recently, or very late on in the story. So I think that PSG have managed to beat these clubs purely because they’ve got that opportunity to offer them first-team football.”
Meanwhile, Spanish journalist Alfredo Martinez didn’t hold back his criticism of the player.
“Before Dro, we’ve already seen many cases of players who chose other clubs in haste,” Martinez wrote on X (h/t Le10Sport). “Many disappointments. If Dro decides to leave, he will miss out on the development he could have had at Barcelona, just like Pedri, Xavi, and Iniesta, who found success later than he would have.”
