Marc-Andre ter Stegen has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona as Tottenham circle

Tottenham’s defensive vulnerabilities were once again laid bare when they faced Leeds United at Elland Road before the international break. Although the Lilywhites eventually secured all three points thanks to goals from Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus, there were several moments when the Yorkshire side came dangerously close to snatching a result against Thomas Frank’s men.

One player who drew attention for mixed reasons was Guglielmo Vicario . The Italian goalkeeper endured a nervy start, struggling to deal with Leeds’ set-pieces and aerial pressure. A lapse in judgment early on nearly cost Spurs dearly when Joe Rodon rattled the post with a close-range header.

To his credit, Vicario gradually grew into the game, producing a series of outstanding saves in the second half to preserve Tottenham’s lead. However, this inconsistency has become a recurring theme during his time at N17 — moments of brilliance often offset by spells of uncertainty. At times, he appears shaky under pressure, yet within the same match, he can pull off world-class stops that keep his team in contention. For fans, assessing his performances has become increasingly difficult.

Tottenham looking to sign Barcelona stalwart Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Given this unpredictability, it’s hardly surprising that Tottenham are reportedly exploring the market for a new goalkeeper ahead of the January transfer window. Adding competition would not only push Vicario to raise his level but also provide Thomas Frank with greater depth and flexibility at the back. Moreover, rotating between keepers could help manage the Italian’s workload across multiple competitions.

Recent reports suggest that Spurs are willing to test the waters for Barcelona stalwart Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s signature. The Germany international has not featured at all under Hansi Flick this season, and a potential move to pastures new seems imminent. The report also adds that Newcastle United and Manchester United are looking to land the 33-year-old as they aim to address their goalkeeping issues in the upcoming transfer window.

However, according to Diario AS, Spurs’ pursuit of the Barcelona veteran has hit a major obstacle. The report claims that Ter Stegen has no intention of leaving Catalonia and remains determined to fight for his place under Flick. Furthermore, Barcelona are reportedly open to keeping him as a second-choice option behind Joan García — provided the 33-year-old agrees to the role.

While this development might initially appear to be a setback, it could actually serve as a blessing in disguise for Tottenham. The club already have Vicario and Antonín Kinský in their goalkeeping ranks — two players with the potential to grow into long-term assets if given consistent opportunities. Pursuing Ter Stegen, at this stage of his career, would contradict Spurs’ youth-oriented, long-term strategy. The German is past his peak years and unlikely to offer much in terms of development or resale value.

So, are the Lilywhites going to make a move for Ter Stegen? Or is it another story that has no basis for any further discussion?
