Tottenham Hotspur need a structural as well as a cultural reset where new players need to be brought in if the club wants to close the gap to its rivals and compete at the top end of the Premier League table.
Daniel Levy must offload the underperforming and fringe players to generate funds for new arrivals in the summer. The Lilywhites faces the prospect of losing many top players once the season ends. World Cup winner Cristian Romero has been keen on a move to Atletico Madrid. Playmaker James Maddison is also linked with an exit, with Manchester City keen on the Tottenham star.
Now, another player has been attracting interest from a European bigwig. According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona are closely monitoring the situation of Pedro Porro at Tottenham. They want to bring in cover for first-choice right-back Jules Kounde, and the Spurs defender’s versatility makes him an attractive target for the Catalan side.
Pedro Porro has enjoyed a fine individual season in an otherwise woeful Spurs’ domestic campaign. He has been a consistent presence in defence, thanks to his availability and fitness levels that has seen him register four goals and nine assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.
At this moment, Tottenham remain uninterested in selling the Spaniard. However, should they receive an offer of around €60-€65 million, the North Londoners could end up selling Porro in the summer. This makes the right-back a dispensable figure, even if he has proven to be an asset for the club in the last two seasons.
Barcelona are aware of Porro’s situation at Tottenham. They have to make significant sales or salary adjustments of players from the current squad to reach closer to Spurs’ valuation of the 25-year-old, the aforementioned report adds. In addition to Hansi Flick’s side, Bayern Munich and Manchester City also remain keen on the Don Benito-born talent.
Spurs are likely to sack Ange Postecoglou at the end of the season, irrespective of what happens in the Europa League final. Levy wants to rebuild the squad under a new head coach, and that could see him sacrifice Porro. Being a valuable asset, the Spanish international’s sale could help generate funds that’d be helpful in reinforcing various areas of the squad.
For now, Tottenham maintain that Porro is unsellable and very much part of the furniture. If Barcelona or any other top European club comes closer to their valuation, and the right-back gets tempted by the offer, we expect the Lilywhites to consider it.
