Barcelona look as if they are set to appoint Hansi Flick as their next head coach, if they can agree a deal to part ways with Xavi Hernandez next week. While Flick demolished Barcelona during his time in charge of Bayern Munich on his way to an historic treble, he is relatively unknown in Spain beyond his exploits in Bavaria.

Flick was sacked by Germany in September of last year, after just over 18 months in charge. It means that Flick would not only have a relationship with Robert Lewandowski from his Bayern days, but also Ilkay Gundogan and Marc-Andre ter Stegen from the national team.

As per Cadena Cope, Barcelona have already asked for Gundogan’s opinion on the 59-year-old. He told Barcelona that Flick was a good person, but lacked some of the hard edge of a candidate like Thomas Tuchel.

Whether that is a positive or a negative remains to be seen. Traditionally, Carlo Ancelotti has been seen to use a softer approach, while the likes of Pep Guardiola has demanded maximum intensity. Flick would be taking his first job outside of Germany, safe for a brief spell in Austria, and it will be interesting to see how he adapts.
