Manchester United continue to move through a period of change as a club. Bruno Fernandes stands at the centre of that story. The Portuguese midfielder has carried the team’s creative load for years. Now he faces renewed speculation about his future.
Interest from Saudi Arabia appeared earlier in the summer, but he chose to stay at the club. The captain believed that he still had unfinished business at Old Trafford. That decision paid off when he set up Harry Maguire’s late winner in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on 19 October. The win pushed United back into the Premier League’s top half.
Yet the discussion about his future refuses to fade. Former Everton chief Keith Wyness, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, said that Bayern Munich plan to make a decisive move for Fernandes. He mentioned that sources close to the club claim that the German champions are preparing a formal offer.
Bayern, already thriving with Harry Kane in top form, view the 31-year-old as a player who can strengthen their attacking setup. Wyness added that both sides could benefit from a transfer. The move would let Manchester United refresh their midfield and reduce their heavy reliance on one player. Meanwhile, we reported earlier in the summer that Manchester United want at least £80 million for Fernandes, and that price could draw serious interest.
“I think Bayern Munich are going to be the ones to come in for him. One of my good sources has told me that there are already bids being readied. They’re looking at the numbers, and Bruno would go to Germany. I think he’d be a big hit over there as well.
“Bayern Munich, we’ve all watched Harry Kane recently in great scoring form. I think Fernandes would do well there, and I think that’s what will happen. It would be good for United as well to freshen up that area. Even though he’s been a great performer for them, I think it’s something that they’ve got to look at for the future to try and reset that midfield.”
Manchester United will soon need to face the idea of playing without their captain. Fernandes often carries the creative responsibility, but his brilliance also creates an imbalance in the squad. The current setup exposes his defensive gaps, and his attacking dominance has limited the development of young talents such as Kobbie Mainoo in that position.
If Bayern Munich make a strong offer, United could use the funds, possibly between £70 and £100 million, to rebuild the squad in a more balanced way. The club can invest in a top defensive midfielder and a dynamic central playmaker to add more stability and flexibility to Amorim’s resources. This change will help the team rely less on one player.
It will let the manager build a more connected structure. Meanwhile, Fernandes believes that United can end in a UEFA Champions League spot by the end of the 2025/26 season, but that goal might unfold without him. If the Red Devils sell him, it will not set the club back. It will mark a necessary step toward a more sustainable future for Manchester United. The move will show a tactical reset and financial improvement, helping the team grow as a complete unit rather than depend on individual brilliance. However, they will need a proper long-term replacement for the Portuguese, which seems to be Mainoo.
