Manchester United have found themselves facing an increasingly difficult situation over one of the brightest young players to come through their academy in recent years.

JJ Gabriel has been regarded as a special talent around Carrington for some time, with his performances at youth level quickly putting him on the radar of clubs across Europe.

The teenager enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 season, scoring 26 goals in 29 appearances across competitions and becoming the youngest winner of United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

That form also earned JJ Gabriel opportunities around the first team during pre-season, including his unofficial senior debut against Atletico Madrid.

Michael Carrick had made it clear that United viewed the youngster as a major talent, while the club had been working on a pathway that would eventually see him become part of the senior setup.

Gabriel then started the new season in spectacular fashion, scoring a hat-trick for United’s U19s against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League.

However, frustration over his lack of first-team involvement soon changed the picture, with his representatives requesting that his youth registration be cancelled.

United rejected that request and have continued attempting to convince the youngster and his family to remain at Old Trafford.

The situation has since become even more complicated, with Gabriel not training at Carrington for several weeks.

He has instead been training individually in the Barcelona area, while reports have linked him with a potential move to several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Bayern Munich hold talks to sign JJ Gabriel

Now another major European heavyweight has stepped up its interest, with Bayern Munich holding talks with Gabriel’s representatives over a possible move, as reported by Sky Sports Germany.

The German champions are not alone in monitoring the situation, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain all reported to be interested.

Bayern are understood to have already met with Gabriel’s camp, while further discussions were scheduled as the teenager’s 16th birthday approached.

Gabriel turned 16 today, a significant date in the saga because he can now sign scholarship terms in England, although he cannot sign a professional contract until turning 17.

His eligibility to potentially move to an EU club is also central to the situation, with his Irish and Cypriot family connections potentially giving him access to an EU passport.

United had been working against that looming deadline as they attempted to secure Gabriel’s future, with reports previously suggesting the club could use a pre-contract arrangement to try to keep him.

That window has now passed without the situation being resolved, leaving United facing the possibility of losing one of their most highly-rated academy prospects.

The club’s position remains complicated because Gabriel is still registered as a United player, while Premier League rules mean his registration cannot simply be cancelled without agreement between the club, player and parent or carer.

United have also reportedly considered legal action if a European club attempts to exploit a FIFA loophole to sign him.
