Tottenham Hotspur ended their search for a versatile forward during the winter transfer window by signing Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich.
The Frenchman was desperate to move away from Bayern Munich during the 2025 transfer intervals, having made just two league starts in the Bundesliga during the first six months of the 2024/25 season. He was hesitant to join the Lilywhites initially, but chairman Daniel Levy eventually persuaded the forward to make the switch to North London.
Spurs have an option to purchase Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich for around €60m but are not rushing into a decision yet amid their ongoing Europa League campaign. Since arriving in England, the teenage prodigy has made seven appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side so far, scoring once in the FA Cup. He is yet to register a goal contribution in the Premier League across five games, which has left the fans a bit divided as to whether Tottenham should trigger the buy option or not.
Despite Tel failing to hit the ground running at Spurs, Ange Postecoglou is convinced that the youngster will prove a success for the club. Bayern Munich would want a resolution on Tel’s future as quickly as possible due to their summer transfer plans.
According to a report from German outlet BILD, Bayern are hoping to sign a striker to serve as Harry Kane’s backup next season, but in order to do that, they would first have to raise cash and are hoping to do so through Tel’s sale to Spurs. The Bavarian giants are hopeful of receiving the full €60m from Tottenham for the France youth international.
No one knows whether Tottenham will trigger Tel’s buy clause or not at the end of the season. The Lilywhites have given no indication about their plans regarding the Sarcelles-born talent. The decision, of course, has to be mutual, and a lot will depend on what the teenage forward wants after he completes the remainder of the season.
There is also the uncertainty surrounding Ange Postecoglou’s future. A new manager, with fresh tactics and ideology, could really throw a spanner into the works if Tel is serious about extending his stay at N17.
Now with total focus on winning the Europa League, we can only expect a decision on Tel’s future perhaps during the close stages of the campaign. So, Bayern will need to be a bit more patient.
