Joe Gomez declared his love for Liverpool football club while highlighting the need to stay ready despite struggling with opportunities. The 27-year-old will celebrate his 10th year at the club at the end of the current season, underlining his loyalty.
Gomez has started each game for the Reds since Ibrahima Konate suffered an ill-timed injury against Real Madrid in November. The 27-year-old has faced struggles with rustiness due to the lack of significant game time this season under Arne Slot.
Nevertheless, Gomez has played an essential role alongside Virgil van Dijk in the club’s wins over Manchester City and Girona. The Reds drew Newcastle United 3-3 in a game where they almost secured three points until Caoimhin Kelleher’s decision-making mistake.
Liverpool have won 19 out of 22 games in all competitions this season, displaying a formidable balance in their game. Slot has emphasized the need for control and patience, allowing the team to maintain focus in both defence and offence.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Gomez highlighted the necessity for squad players to stay ready despite struggling to receive enough game time. He said:
“It is tricky because you don’t know when the chance will come or under what circumstances, what position and so on and so forth. But I can only control what I can focus on and that is being the best professional I can be. It is a great club to be at – and to see the positives in it. It could be worse. As a player, you always want to play so you have to just try to be ready. In many ways, I am used to it and have had many ups and downs but you relish playing and having the opportunity to be in the team.”
Gomez joined Liverpool under former manager Brendan Rodgers and played a key role throughout the Jurgen Klopp era. The 27-year-old has faced many ups and downs during this Liverpool tenure while establishing a strong relationship with the fanbase.
From nagging injuries to his last season’s heroic where he played in multiple roles and delivered high-quality performances, Gomez has experienced a lot with Liverpool. Gomez declared his love for the Liverpool football club, sharing his gratitude for spending a decade in front of the Kopites. He added:
“It was definitely for real. My focus was always on the club but I know how blessed I am to be here and I will be 10 years [at Liverpool] in the summer. I don’t take that for granted. It is the best club in the world in my eyes and it was quickly a case of adapting and getting into the swing of things. It was good to put it to bed. That is football. I am a big believer in focusing on the present. To be somewhere 10 years and not have any blips would not be natural, which probably speaks about my ambition. I love being here. I love the club.”
Liverpool needs Gomez to maintain a high level of consistency this season even when in-form defender Ibrahima Konate returns. Both fans and the 27-year-old will celebrate his 10th year at the club irrespective of what happens this season but securing major trophies will become a deserved end to a beautiful decade.
