Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United is under renewed scrutiny following two difficult seasons.

After joining from Inter Milan for £47 million, Onana struggled to adapt to Erik ten Hag’s setup — a move originally hoped to reshape the team’s style of play.

While he did play a part in United’s 2024 FA Cup triumph, Onana’s errors in the league and Europe — most notably costing a place in the Champions League knockouts — raised early concerns.

Form issues crept in again the next year, culminating in a mistake during the Europa League final that handed Tottenham a 1-0 win.

Despite starting the 2024/25 campaign well, Onana’s later performances left many questioning whether he was the right long-term fit between the posts.

Ben Foster advises Man Utd to replace Andre Onana with Emi Martinez

Ben Foster, reflecting on Onana’s impact, told talkSPORT that the current No.1 “hasn’t done enough” to secure his role long-term — pointing to Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez as a more proven choice.

“It’s a brutal league, the Premier League, and I think [over] the last two seasons that he hasn’t done enough to prove that he is a Manchester United No 1,” Foster said.

“I think he’s got ability and like so many other Man United players, he’d go elsewhere and probably flourish. I think that’s probably going to be the case with him as well.

“If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like an Emi Martinez, they’ve got to go for it. He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“A lot of people said this season, probably not up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“You’ve got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno’s going to be staying now.

“It’s a great start to the transfer window for them.”

Reports earlier this year suggested Manchester United had explored an approach for Martinez during the January window, though no formal bid was made at the time.

There is now growing speculation that United are monitoring his status closely, with the World Cup winner reportedly considering a new challenge away from Villa Park this summer.

Only time will tell. Let’s see how things materialise over the summer transfer window for both Villa and Manchester United.
