It has been a memorable start to life at Manchester United for Benjamin Sesko.
The big-money summer signing has already shown a knack for decisive moments, including a dramatic late equaliser at West Ham and a crucial late winner against Fulham that helped maintain momentum in the race for UEFA Champions League places.
Signed to lead the line in a new-look attack, Sesko has quickly become central to newly appointed Michael Carrick’s system.
His movement, physical presence and composure in front of goal have added a different dynamic to United’s forward play, linking effectively with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo in recent weeks.
Now, however, the Slovenian has offered supporters a fascinating glimpse into his early footballing journey.
Speaking on Manchester United’s Inside Carrington podcast, Sesko revealed he did not always see himself as a striker.
“I started as a goalkeeper, when I was a really young age. But then one game I said, I remember, I looked at my father in the middle of the game, I said, ‘father, this is so boring. I don’t have anything to do in the goal.'”
The United forward admitted he quickly grew frustrated watching others struggle to score.
“It was hard for me to see, like, people, like, teammates playing up there [who] couldn’t score a goal…”
Incredibly, he even hinted at early signs of his attacking instincts while still between the posts.
“There was also times when I was goalkeeper, I took the ball, went through whole pitch and then scored a goal. It’s like, yeah, it was really a nice journey.”
That experiment did not last long.
“And then I started as a centre-back and then I went up to striker.”
Given his recent heroics in a United shirt, it is safe to say the switch worked out.
What began as boredom in goal has evolved into a striker thriving under the Old Trafford spotlight – and if his early-season form continues, supporters will be more than happy he left the gloves behind.
