Benjamin Sesko finally ended his scoring drought with a two-goal performance against Burnley, but he also managed to highlight a difference between himself and Rasmus Hojlund that goes beyond the scoresheet.
There’s been plenty of debate around Benjamin Sesko and Rasmus Hojlund lately, much of it unfairly tilted against the Man Utd striker.
While Hojlund has been solid for Napoli and Sesko has had his struggles at Old Trafford, the comparisons haven’t really captured what matters.
Instead, it makes more sense to look at how Sesko is performing compared to Hojlund during his own time at United. That’s where an interesting contrast starts to show up, one that favours the Slovenian over the Dane.
Sesko’s brace doesn’t suddenly solve all of United’s issues, and he’s not being painted as a world-beater just yet. But beyond the stats, the narrative around him hasn’t been kind.
While he has missed his share of chances recently, that in itself is an improvement over last season, when he wasn’t even getting into those positions consistently.
His movement and anticipation have always been sharp. It seemed clear that his scoring issues were more about confidence than ability.
Now that he’s found the net twice, there’s hope the goals will keep coming. Even if they don’t immediately flow, his performance against Burnley highlighted a clear difference from Hojlund’s time at United.
Sesko finished with seven shots on target from eight total attempts against Burnley, with an expected goals tally of 1.14.
On its own, it looks impressive. But compared to Hojlund’s entire shot record for last season—just 13 on target—it puts Sesko’s numbers into perspective. He managed more than half of Hojlund’s total in just one match.
The gap is already clear between Rasmus Hojlund at Man Utd and Benjamin Sesko at Manchester United before Christmas in their first seasons as well…
There was more to Benjamin Sesko’s performance against Burnley than just the two goals. Even before they arrived, his movement and energy had made a real impact.
His anticipation in the box, his timing of runs, and his general feel for where to be are all impressive for a player still learning the game at this level.
The clinical edge isn’t there yet, but that’s something that should come with time and confidence as he gets more minutes under his belt.
Already, though, he offers far more than Hojlund did towards the end of his time at United. The Dane had become little more than an extra body on the pitch by the time he left.
Even when Sesko isn’t finding the net, he’s still causing problems for defenders and providing an outlet. It’s a foundation to build on as he continues to develop.
