Biennial World Cup is ‘off the table,’ says UEFA president

The World Cup happens every four years and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says that won't change any time soon. While FIFA has floated the idea of making the tournament happen once every two years, Ceferin has been a vocal opponent of the proposal and believes he'll get his way.

“A biennial World Cup is a no go for everyone in football,” Ceferin said at a business summit on Thursday, via The Athletic. “I am glad FIFA has realised that as well.

“We have discussions but as far as I am concerned, a biennial World Cup is off the table. I am sure we will come to a solution with FIFA soon.”

In September, Ceferin said European countries could go so far as to boycott the World Cup if it was switched to a biennial event. In December, he said that the idea would "cannibalize women's football" by butting up against the women's World Cup, in addition to the Olympics.

Meanwhile, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said it would be no different than the Super Bowl, which still draws interest despite being an annual event. Infantino also said surveys have shown the majority of fans wish for a biennial World Cup.

UEFA is joined by South America's CONMEBOL in opposition of the biennial World Cup proposal, while Africa's CAF has backed the idea, according to The Athletic.
